Personal

The personal site generally tells the story of an individual or a family. It is a good place to steer a new friend or long lost friend to find out what is going on in your or your family’s life. Many people build these sites for fun, and they are an excellent hobby akin to a photo album with captions and text.

A personal site can take on deeper meaning if it is treated seriously and set up as an online résumé. It is always handy to have a printer-friendly résumé available in case you run out of printed copies when you are out job hunting. Some employers will even use the online résumé itself. If done well, it can demonstrate to a prospective employer that you have some Web savvy whether you built the site yourself or commissioned it.

A caveat for personal sites has to do with the very core of what a Web site is -- it is global; it is out where anyone can see it. Be careful what you put on it. Your children's pictures, location information, such as addresses, phone numbers, the schools your children attend can be sources of information for a segment of the population you really do not want in your life.
